Yikes!

"I can only get grey scale when I use safe mode! Help!"

Yep, unsupported video adapter will do that.

Before I actually read the safe mode start up options I was using grey scale too. Seems odd that most of Be Inc's work was simple to find but this one had me stumped.

Let's start from the boot up and try it another way. OK?

You can access the boot up safe mode options from a couple of ways. I usually look for "Loading..." and press the space bar. It should be just after the boot device (CD/Floppy/Hd) starts to access after POST has completed. This can also be done just when you start to see the purple icons, but just at the start only. You then have a few options on the page.

The Title will be BeOS Release BeOS whatever Boot Loader

The the options will be

  • Select new boot volume
  • Select safe mode options
  • Select fail-safe video options (Current: Default)

Now if you are like me you never really read that it is SAYING Default now did you? If you don't want grey scale then let's pick the last option by using the arrow down to and then enter key.

On the screen that comes up is your way the choose a new Current setting! HuH? Well, arrow down now and pick something within your monitor range. (if you go too far you might have a smoked monitor!)

Go to continue booting and see what happens.

There are other tips on using Vesa on wiki and a nify app at bebits to set your boot options called VesaAccepted.
