This is a brief tutorial on how to run BeOS 5.0 on Microsoft Virtual PC 2004.

What you need ...

  • PC with Windows or a Mac with OS X
  • Virtual PC 2004 (45 Day Trial Version for the PC can be downloaded from here)
  • BeOS 5.0 CD or ISO image

Create Virtual Machine

  1. Start Virtual PC.
  2. Click on the New Button, the will launch the New Virtual Machine wizard.
  3. Give it a Name eg. BeOS
  4. For Operating System, Select Windows 98. (Ed: I know, I know)
  5. Adjust RAM to Suit. (This will depend on your PC specs)
  6. Add New Machine and then Finish.

Setup Partitions and CD

  1. Insert a Windows 98 SE Start Up (if you don't have one, download and create one from here)
  2. Launch your Virtual Machine
  3. From the Top Menu, Capture the Floppy Drive.
  4. Once at a DOS Prompt, you can format your Virtual Hard Drive (as FAT32)
  5. Now your Partition is recognizable by the BeOS Installer.

Next we'll mount our CD or ISO image and blow away the partiton we just did. Unfortunately, this is a necessary evil step. Someone may have a nicer way of completing this. If so, update this section. All I know is it works ;)

Note: If anyone knows how to solve the BeOS crashes to KDL because it can't recognize the boot partition please update this page or email me at Zaranthos_99@yahoo.com.

Mount CD for Installing

  1. Launch your Virtual Machine
  2. From the Top Menu, Mount your CD-Rom or your ISO image.
You should then have be presented with the Installer such as below:-

Installer
