In the past, privacy management wasn't much of a big deal. The most you had to worry about was a virus on a floppy wiping out your data. Then modems came and you got a chance to get a virus that might wipe out information via a download from a BBS. It was relatively unlikely that someone would try to attack your machine through your modem. (and usually impossible)
Today though, things are much more complex. A lot of computers are hooked up to the internet via complete, always-on connections such as DSL or cable. People use email and the world wide web extensively, both of which generally send text without encryption. (SSL is an exception) On some OSs one even has to contend with applications that report on you to their creators. Here are some general areas with more specific discussion:
- PrivacyManagementInEmail - sending your email without snoops reading it
- PrivacyManagementOnTheWeb - browsing without snoops monitoring you
- PrivacyManagementOverAppNet - controlling spyware
- PrivacyManagementOnTheFileSystem - storing your applications and datas securely
- PrivacyManagementInChat - IRC, instant messaging and friends
