The Notification Panel is my new conception for the Sounds Settings panel. As it is, this panel is rather sparse, but it is a great resource which goes underutilized. A few apps do post their notification sounds in there where you can change them. (such as BeShare) However the interface on this panel is rather poor and font-insensitive. (See WidgetFontSensitivity.)
Besides that this panel represents an opportunity to create a more general notification mechanism. People who have tried Mail Daemon Replacement or other mail related notification application know that there are many different viable options for notification. Why not present all these options in one place where users can pick their preferences?
Different possible notifications could include:
- Play a sound.
- Display something in the deskbar.
- Flash something, tab, window, background, etc.
- Display an alert box.
- Email someone! (more specific case of just "run an app", probably)
This could be helpful to people with HearingImpairments.
