Haiku (formerly codenamed OpenBeOS) is an open source community project with the goal of replicating the BeOS operating system. The project is attempting to maintain as much binary compatibility as possible. For the non-tech-speakers, this means that you will be able to run apps from BeOS R5 on the new OS. This project is often referred to as R1.
Although R1 is primarily designed to construct an open-source version of BeOS for the community to improve in various anticipated ways, the R1 project has maintained a fairly consistent focus on replication before creation of new functionality. The few exceptions to this are due to lack of information about various APIs and also some small but widely recognized deficiencies in the BeOS APIs. Oh, and generally it's going to attempt to be less buggy in parts too. :-) Many BeOS users are looking forward to the new net_server, for example, which will hopefully be more stable and faster.
The GlassElevator project is looking forward to R2 and beyond.
Add more information on your perspective of OpenBeOS or more details on these various issues if you are knowledgeable about them.
