OSBOS Native Games

Other OS Games

There are thre main aproaches to running another OS's apps. The first is a hardware emulator like BOCHS, the second is an operating system emulator like WINE and the third is in between like DOSBox

BOCHS

This emulates an x86 machine. It is being used by the OpenBeOS project. It requires you have an operating system, like FreeDOS.

DOSBox

This emulates DOS running on an x86. It has a basic DOS built in. I have successfully used it to play "Legend of Kyrandia" and "Hand of Fate". (On 20040319) It doesn't have DPMI (DOS Protected Memory Interface) support so some games won't run yet, like "Transport Tycoon" :(

*edit* erherm, it does have basic DPMI. USM2 will run fine for instante. However TTDLX (yes, I'm an addict too), needs more i386 instruction support apparently

*edit 2* not that you need to run Transport Tycoon in DOSBox on BeOS any more, check the recently added applications :-)

Neutral Games

Some games are developed to run totally on a game engine and as such are platform neutral.

SCUMM

One of these engines is LucasArts' SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion). It is Classic 2D Adventure Game Engine. It was used to create many notable games. (Most of these released for DOS.)
  • Maniac Mansion
  • Monkey Island
  • Day of the Tentacle
  • Sam and Max
  • Full Throttle
However some helpful folks at http://www.scummvm.org/ have created a virtual machine that will run these games (Download). ScummVM also supports non-SCUMM games like Flight of the Amazon Queen, Beneath a Steel Sky and Broken Sword and many others. It uses SDL and will also run on other platforms including Palms, Pocket PCs, Linux and Windows.

If you own a game that runs on the SCUMM engine you might be able to run it under SCUMMVM on an OSBOS.

But wait there's More! Some very nice people have released their games as Freeware!

Flight of the Amazon Queen (Freeware)
Copyright John Passfield and Steven Stamatiadis. (Open to Modification.) This is a good 'Tongue in Cheek' B-Movie where the hero wanders around the Amazon. (I like it :) Download (Talkie 32Mb, Text 6Mb)

Beneath a Steel Sky (Freeware)
Download (Talkie 67Mb, Text 7Mb)

Wanted Port of Dungeon Master
SDL-Code for Linux and Windows
Dungeon Master is running on DosBox ver.0.6.0 allready as Dungeon Master2 and Dungeon Hack oh ya Eye of the Beholder works too.
