CleanAndMeanMpthreeQueries

I've compiled a few tips on taking advantage of the power of the BFS (Be File System) inherent in the BeOS.This HowTo assumes you have mp3s setup with bfs attributes and that they are query-able. You may have dabbled in querying all your mp3s at lightning fast speed before to manage and display your mp3 collection. This comes in handy especially when dealing with the brilliant TuneTracker™ software. Need to find that mp3 or a whole album fast? Need to have it displayed cleanly and informatively? Then these tips are for you:

Query Templates + SpicyKeys = Good Thing!

First we're going to make a query template, which is essential for quick searching of mp3s on the BeOS. Open up the find panel (from the Deskbar or Alt-F from the desktop). You'll see a few dropdown menus in the panel, change the first one to "MPEG Audio File" and the second to "by Attribute". You can then see in the part below another dropdown menu, which you can use to select the default search criteria. In my screenshot I have selected the "Artist" field.

Now, once you've selected your criteria, it's time to click on the arrow in the top left hand corner and choose "Save Query as template...". Once you've done that, you can find that template, then click and drag it onto SpicyKeys, so that you have a fast mp3 query template at your fingertips. Great, you've now finished the first step

Clean and Informative Results

Now you are thinking: "Sure, I've made the template, ran a few queries and that's all I need to know". Well, perhaps you're correct but I have another tip you may be interested in. This tip will show you how to sort those queries into having columns showing the attributes in the mp3s for clearer queries.
Firstly, open up this folder in the Tracker:
"/boot/home/config/settings/Tracker/DefaultQueryTemplates"

then make a new folder in there, and rename it to "audio_x-mpeg" , which is the filetype belonging to mp3s. Now, open up the folder, copy in an existing mp3 on your system into that folder. Next, select "Attributes" from the menu in the Tracker and arrange the columns to taste using the MPEG Audio File submenu, and the attributes listed there, then delete the mp3 and close the folder.

Now that's done you can try searching for some mp3s BeOS style. Use your shortcut key/s you defined in SpicyKeys to open up the query template you saved earlier and run a query for some mp3s. You should see the mp3s you searched for displayed in neat, attractive columns, which looks much better than the default columns and are much more functional too. Here's an example of what it looks like in my second screenshot
