Netscape Communications Corporation

On May 10, 1997, at the first ever Be Developers Conference (BeDC) Netscape Communications Corporation issued a press release announcing that it would "adapt and release Netscape FastTrack Server software for the Be Operating System (BeOS)." The release was targeted for the fall of 1997. It is not clear whether Netscape FastTrack Server was ever actually released for BeOS.

O'Reilly & Associates

Also issued on May 10, 1997, at the first BeDC was a press release by O'Reilly & Associates announcing that O'Reilly would be the official publisher of the Be Book. The Be Book ("the official programmer's reference manual [of] the BeOS") was slated to be published in July of 1998; the same time that the final version of BeOS was to be released.

Intel

On January 28, 1998, Be issued a press release announcing the next BeDC (now the third) would be held March 19-20, 1998, and that "attendees will receive the first complete copies of the BeOS for Intel Pentium processors."

Be had originally demonstrated BeOS running on the Intel Architecture August 4, 1997, at the second BeDC. There had been rumors of an Intel port floating around for months before even that.

On March 20, 1998, as promised Be issued a press release at the third BeDC indicating "the shipment of the Be Operating System Release 3, the first version to run on Intel Pentium-based personal computers." This press release was issued about one year after Intel reportedly approached Be (Mac Observer July 9, 1997) to do a port to the Intel Architecture. Be's engineers were busy adding new exciting features to the Preview Release of BeOS. Intel helped jump start the port by loaning two of its engineers to Be.

Metrowerks

In a press release on March 19, 1998, at the third BeDC Jean-Louis Gassée said of Metrowerks, "Metrowerks has been one of Be's best, most loyal and most effective partners." He wasn't exaggerating. Metrowerks had been a parter of Be's all the way back in 1995 when on October 3 they announced CodeWarrior tools for the BeBox computer system. They shipped the completed CodeWarrior development tools on April 17, 1996.

That press release from March 19, 1998--from which Jean-Louis Gassée was quoted-- announced that Metrowerks and Be announced had extended their previous agreement for five more years. According to the press release the extended agreement included Metrowerks broadening the tools to support the Intel Archetecture in addition to the existing support for the PowerPC Architecture. The terms of the deal also included "Be [managing] the strategic direction of the CodeWarrior? Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for the BeOS and Metrowerks [concentrating] on delivering the best compiler, linker and library technology for Be Developers."
