**disclaimer**

Remember that the way this works (at least regarding BeOS and Sheepshaver) is that BeOS runs MacOS as an Application. This will not work for BeOS on Linux because BeOS is a more complex OS with higher expectations for the hardware which it runs on. MOL may work, but I doubt the hardware it emulates is sufficient.

Remember also that SheepShaver uses the native PPC (603[e]/604[e]) to run BeOS, so if there is an incompatibility or issue with the way in which a G4 runs certain commands, BeOS will not run (see BeOS bible, the History of Be section, re. the trials of running BeOS on a Power Computing 200mhz 604e for an Apple expo.

Late night net cafe sessions et al. Another note is that SheepShaver will not run MacOS 9.1, so it's entirely possible that there *is* some hardware emulation going on (even on Macs that will run the exact same MacOS without problems), and 9.1 doesn't like what it see's. I get a 'MacOS can not run on the hardware for this computer' type error under SheepShaver when booting 9.1.

I was recently thinking (while traying to decide on Mac or x86 laptop) that it would be maybe interesting to try releaseing a distribution of BeOS (basicly BeOS PE patched with new OpenBeOS code) that would run within highly optimised Linux environment (maximum drivers, minimum app bloatware) for new x86 and unsupported PPC hardware. This has been done previously from BeOS side to Mac OS on PPC with SheepShaver app, and more recently with Linux on PPC with MacOnLinux project.

By doing this a lot of work in between FreeBe, BlueEyedOS and OpenBeOS can be reused and still not have end-users and potential Linux developers wait forever for trying OpenBeOS & Zeta.

  • SheepShaver (BeBits entry) - is a MacOS run-time environment for BeOS that allows you to run MacOS applications at native speed inside the BeOS multitasking environment on PowerPC-based BeOS systems. SheepShaver is neither a MacOS replacement nor an emulator. It runs (and requires) an unmodified PowerPC MacOS 7.x/8.x under control of the BeOS at full speed without any kind of emulation. BeOS and MacOS applications can run at the same time and data can be exchanged between them

  • Mac-On-Linux page - not an emulator but runs runs the OS directly without any CPU emulation.

New!: Is there anyone around who managed to install BeOS within Linux (Bochs or some other way)? I have 1GB of RAM and can not have BeOS working on my laptop :(

Reply: BeOS will not run under Bochs currently. BeOS required a better emulation than almost all of the Virtual Machines (VMWare, SoftWindows, VirtualPC etc) supply.
