AppsForBoredDevsToWrite
I'm not sure if there are any bored BeOS devs out there, but ...

A lot of the time, new developers who are learning the Be API will waste time coding something that's already been done (to death). Give them something useful to do! (Smaller projects are probably more likely to be adopted.)

Small Apps

  • Simple GIF Editor - Daniel Switkins Anime?
  • Color Table Editor
  • Eyedrop Tool - Unless I'm mistaken this is called "Colors!" & has been available for a long time...
  • Netprefs importer - A tool that imports network settings from windows or linux. (ip adress, gateways etc.)
  • Glimpse front end - Searching thru your docs would be cool. Some people are allergic to BASH.
  • RSS Feed Gismo - I say gismo because while we have a few RSS tools they lack much of the functionality most RSS tools have on other OS's. We need one thats got that slick "Gismo" Appeal, slick skins nice interface, easy to customize.

slaad has made an RSS Aggregateor http://beos.bong.com.au/?project=10 It's still in development and hasn't yet been released. There's even a RSS feed for Haiku's cvs commits, which IMO would be really cool to see with RSS Aggregator that displays it via slaad's InfoPopper.

Larger Apps

  • Win2K/XP Remote Desktop Connection client - This exists for BONE -- known to work on net_server too (mmu_man)
  • A Text editor that feels like TextPad - pe not good enough for you?? - no, not quite: wrong feel, no macros or spellcheck, etc.
  • BFS Clients for Windows, Macs, and Linux. Having a standalone application that access the partition/file is better than wainting forever for integrated support. OpenBFS Site - Linux kernel 2.6 includes support for BFS, as did late 2.4.x releases. modprobe befs and mount with type befs
  • Media Player, you can scream SoundPlay till you're blue in the face, but I don't like it & I'm not the only one. Don't try to say it's cuz I/we don't wanna pay for software either cuz I have plenty of paid-for, commercial Be software. We need a serious player along the lines of Music Match or Winamp 5, like it or not they are defacto's for ease of use and feature rich media players, with highly customizable interfaces. For video, try VLC. It will play most any audio or video format under the sun, and is the only player under BeOS to my knowledge that will play WMA files (most). For audio, try CL-Amp, it was designed after WinAmp and works with many types of WinAmp skins, playlists, etc. Or, you can write your own small playlist management app and use BeOS's inter-application messaging features and replicants to control SoundPlay (that is, use SoundPlay for actually playing the media but write your own interface; IIRC, TuneTracker does this, albeit to a much more sophisticaed degree)

VLC can not play streams worth a toot, it has big issues with buffering depending on the version you use & in all cases will pitch shift when trying to recover lost frames. That's a tad irritating when every 30 seconds the pitch of your audio changes.

  • DirectConnect client (continuance of BeDC maybe - www.sourceforge.net/projects/bedc - features hublisting, hubconnecting and chat)

Business Apps

  • POS style software that allows customer a database intergrated PIM, email, invoicing, book keeping, reports and more. This would also require something like an updated php, apache, and mysql.

Ports

Update
  • php
  • perl
  • postgreSQL
  • apache
  • glimpse
Port
  • mysql
  • Evolution (Native not using X11)

Technologies

OpenBeOS Application Team

This OpenBeOS team is trying to recreate the basic applications included with BeInc's BeOS R5. There are many command line applications and several preference applications that need to be written. http://obos.gravity24hr.com/index.php Note: link not working, please update it, I'm very interested on this.
