My first exposure to BeOS was back at my university years and years ago, when they brought a BeBox and demonstrated it. I think it was DR8 or something like that. Anyway, I printed out the entire BeBook and proceeded to read it like a book. Unfortunately I didn't have the spare change to get a BeBox at the time. Although I knew I wanted to program for it!
Fast forward to modern times. April something-or-another, 2001, I discover the BeOS Personal Edition - for intel machines! I proceed to download and install. After playing for just a little while I sent my money off for Pro, Gobe Productive, and the BeOS Bible package.
Now I've got a couple of apps on bebits, although I didn't really write much code for them. wget 1.8.2 and HybridDivx. Although I've done some coding on the NiftyPlayer code base I don't think anything that I've done is in the version on bebits. I've also made a trivial contribution or two to BeShare. Speaking of BeShare, I'm logged in quite regularly on the tycomsystems.beshare.com server, as "Andrew".
Glass Elevator!
I spent a lot of time now working on the GlassElevator project and trying to learn more about various standards in an effort to help develop a stronger successor to BeOS. I've made links from some of my contributions on GlassElevator to this page with this icon:
If you are reading something on the glass elevator pages, please feel free to contribute your knowledge. It's meant to be a community effort. Speaking for myself personally, I have limited experience with a number of aspects of computer usage. There are many areas where people have better knowledge than me and we all benefit when people contribute what experience they have. Don't think I'll be bothered if you edit something that I wrote. :-) Also, just because it has that icon on it doesn't mean that I wrote it all. And just because it doesn't have the icon doesn't mean I didn't contribute to it. ;-)
